"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'" Matthew 25:40

"42 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant," Mark 10:42,43

People had been doing those types of things long before he had ever existed. And again, there is no written literature, notes, or anything by this supposed Jesus. And most of what he is said to have said had been written 100's of years after his death in a magical verbatim quotation.

The ultimate purpose of life is self-attainment. That is what purpose is. ;)

Jackal, I realize your sole agenda on NV is to troll articles of a religious nature and obsessively post comments which fly in the face of the CoH in an attempt to denigrate, belittle, ridicule, deny, etc etc the beliefs of other people.

I cited the scriptures above because the man in the video is an example of the concept. They are quite relevant, though you don't need to agree, since this is not about whether you think someone else's beliefs are valid or not.

You certainly have the right to thump your "gospels" of Dawkins, Hitchens, Dennet, etc on a relevant thread, however this thread is not about debate, rather it's meant to be:

INSPIRATIONAL, POSITIVE and ENCOURAGING to people. It's about serving others.

Any posts that express intolerance toward anyone, or otherwise violate the Code of Honor, you can bet will be deleted.

SOTS, may I take certain exception to your response to Jackal? I see no violations of CoH in his response. He merely inferred that a belief in God is not a prerequisite to good works. The fact that it is about people caring about people doesn't make it the sole purveyance or your diety. Humanitarian deeds and behaviors is in the heart of the giver, regardless or in spite of theisms. Jackal's comment were observational and indisputably true!

Stranger On The Shore,

You missed my point entirely and then you deposited a logical fallacy in regards to my reply. You then try and make a moral game of it not realizing the fact that morality is latent in nature and is completely relative. And I also addressed the purpose of life argument quite well in accordance to your own seeds mentioning of.

which fly in the face of the CoH

This is a logical fallacy, if not morally wrong to accuse someone of violating rules they hadn't violated.

I cited the scriptures above because the man in the video is an example of the concept. They are quite relevant, though you don't need to agree, since this is not about whether you think someone else's beliefs are valid or not.

Actually the entire article is depending on what we think in terms of their validity. It's called having an opinion on the subject and conveying it. And I didn't say your scriptures were or weren't relevant to the video either. My response to the article rested on the common suggestion by religious organizations that their religion is somehow the foundation of good deeds, or morality when they are not. Although they can engage in good deeds like everyone else can, they are not the foundation or the origin of.

INSPIRATIONAL, POSITIVE and ENCOURAGING to people. It's about serving others.

Is that why I posted this? :

The ultimate purpose of life is self-attainment. That is what purpose is. ;)

Encouraging people to self-attain their own purpose in life seems quite encouraging. Granted my post wasn't entirely focused on that particular aspect of your article, but I did address it from my own perspective. And what I encourage is a more practical form of tolerance to which doesn't require a religion, or even an idol of worship to follow as some sort of role model. The nature of doing good deeds is naturally what is beneficial for the species :)

But the problem I have with people using the bible for such encouragement is that it's done dishonestly, and usually done by organizations just looking to increase their congregation. And it's even worse when you look into all the manipulation that stems from it. So I naturally question it since I've been so much apart of it :/

BTW, calling someone a Troll isn't exactly following the COH is it? And btw, my sole agenda on NV actually has nothing to do with trolling religious articles. Yes, I've gotten more involved recently concerning religion, but hardly is it the sole thing I've posted on. You might want to try and use the history link before depositing accusations. And btw, there is nothing wrong with combating ignorance on NV, it's in fact what I can consider doing a good deed. And calling people trolls ignorantly isn't exactly what I would call promoting good deeds, or even following the supposed role model in the article. :/

I would suggest you restore the comments since they are on topic. In case you don't know the rules listed in the COH, you have violated the following rule:

As the host of your column, you are expected to foster healthy, open discussions by setting a good example. Be responsible for the content you submit and exercise impartiality when deleting comments and reporting abuse.

      More specifically:

      1. Do not delete comments based on disagreement; remove only comments that grossly violate the Code of Honor or the User Agreement.
      2. Comments that are grossly off-topic may be deleted. If the majority of the comment is on-topic, then the comment may not be deleted for being off-topic.

None of my comments were "Grossly off-topic".. And my last comments are of disagreement to your own violation of the rules. So either restore them, or be reported.

Dear Friend SOTS: Your response to The Jackel is on point, and completely correct. The thrust of the article is about being your brother's keeper. No where in that video did I hear or see any attempt to say that being good to others is a bad thing, or that one way is the only way to be motivated to a life of service to humanity. Non-believers can as well help others for reasons of their own. That would be on point. Jackal and Pick Nick could have said that as those who follow some other moral code, they too wish to help others. That is not what they centered on. They were both off point.

Congratulations on your fione seed here. As a species, we will get father being there for others, instead of ridiculing those who do.

        Well done!

Shalom U'vracha. Peace and Blessing, Enoch.

I'm sorry, Enoch. It is only my contention that many people discount good deeds if they're NOT performed in the name of God, as if that is the only blanket under which they may or can be performed. Didn't mean to offend, only inform.

        Dear Friend Enoch,

Agreed. Thank you for your insightful comments. As always, I appreciate the measure of wisdom you always bring along with your intellect.

I have a friend who is a Brahman. Recently he was telling me about growing up in India, and the social stigma of the 'Untouchable' class. I find him to be a person of uncommon compassion and generosity. It was so good to see the man in this video just push through convention and reach out to suffering people.

Shalom U'vracha to you and yours, SOTS. : )

and yet so many whine about taxes .... a way of being there for others. it's hypocrisy.

        Ripley,

I posted to your thread, to stay on topic here. (some good points there, btw.)

Tell me, did you find any inspiration in the Indian man's story? I like how he just stripped off all cultural tradition which had been an obstacle to the recognition of the humanity of others. (your article shows that political partisanship can also be an obstacle.)

Deeds such as these must be in a person's heart. To say, "But for God I couldn't/wouldn't have done this" seems more apologetic than inspired. It is people who are good or bad, regardless of any other influence. I, personally, feel insulted when people attribute the goodness in my own heart to a God. I've performed many good deeds in the name of, "Humanity."

Thank you for your thoughtful post.

"I must believe that things like this happen all over and while many have a "religious" bend countless little decencies occur without thought of personal gain."

I also think that giving, in it's purest form, should not consider personal gain as a factor. I like your phrasing of "countless little decencies". It sounds like a line in a poem (if you write one, look me up so I can read it!! : ))

I am always happy to encounter someone who does good works, out of the kindness of their hearts, with no attempt to capitalize on those works to get elected into some office or other, or to garner public admiration, or fame. Likewise, I am not impressed by people who do good works in hopes of some personal reward even if it is from god. A good work is only such when the doer expects, nor seeks any reward for doing it. A case in point, when the last big hurricane hit Hatti, and nearly destroyed it. a well know actress and her husband charted several cargo planes, loaded them up with medical supplies and staff, as well as building materials and volunteers and flew there and got to work. She has never said anything publicly about it, (I estimate that it cost them over ten million dollars) and when one reported asked her about it she told him it was not an appropriate question and ended the interview. That is a good person.

            Dear RGoodfellow,

I could not agree more with your post.

"Likewise, I am not impressed by people who do good works in hopes of some personal reward even if it is from god. A good work is only such when the doer expects, nor seeks any reward for doing it."

            Giving to the Needy

1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matt. 6:1-4

            Motive matters.

Thank you also, for illustrating your point with the story about Haiti. People like that who give with the right heart have my respect for sure.

Thank you for bringing your insight.

            Peace, SOTS.

My dear Friend SOTS, Thank you so much for this seed and video. If I may you have done your self proud. All one has to do is to look into the eyes of this man and one can see the spirit of the love he aspires from his soul. He truly lives the his spiritual path. There in lies the differences of following a Religion when convenient and living the spirituality of the Religion on a 24/7 basis. In this case the man lives is Brahman class and does not wear it. Thank you.

I would like share a brief story, if I may, which brings the point home a bit. There was a group of Roman Catholic, other denominational Priests and Clergy who when to visit Mother Tressa, when they arrived they were put up in very limited space and conditions. When woken they given little to eat, and were given a wash bowl, water, soap and towels and told to go out to the street and told to clean up those who were lying in the streets. I ask one of the priests, who it went. His comments were: I found a man so filthy and dirty lying in the street, and he said he knelled down and could not bring himself to touch the man and remained silent for a while. Then he felt a presents behind him and he heard Mother Tresa ask him the following question, "are you having trouble?" He replied "yes". She then said,"you need to see G-d in his face." and she walked off without another word. My friend came back a changed man.

I don't know the Ultimate purpose of life for every one, but for myself I can only speak. I know a promise was made and when fulfilled I will return to the source of my creation. And as life is given I must accept my lot, do my best and make free choices between Good and Evil. Eliminate the desires of the senses, realize things of the world are impermanent. So give faith, hope and charity, I walk my humble path expecting nothing but each my needs are given, my needs are unimportant and I let life come to me hoping I will make good decisions based upon the grace and guidance of my creator.

Hope this makes some sense and thank you again for the great seed. Peace.

            Dear Friend Walt,

So good to hear from you, and yes, it does make sense. Thank you for bringing your thoughts and the story to this seed.

"... make free choices between Good and Evil" That's where the rubber meets the road, eh? I've been listening to a couple of lectures about evil this week. Really gets me thinking .....

You speak of "walking your humble path ..." , and it brings to mind Micah:

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

Take care Walt and G-d bless, SOTS.
